The Worst of Times, The Best of Times...

2007 was one of the hardest years of my life. My father told me, and my five siblings in January of last year, that he was losing his long battle to survive cancer. He made it to April. The time in between was hell, especially for my sisters who live near him in Oregon. I drove down there as often as I could, and it wasn't enough. The letting go was hard and cruel. There isn't much good to say about it, except that he died at home with the windows to his beloved garden open, and with daughters around him who loved him in a huge and complete and unconditional way. My father was an athlete, a gardener, and a healthy guy. To the last weeks he was managing many things well, and with grace.

During the year I was dancing a lot, learning the music, and working hard towards an exhibit. The dances that I had gave me comfort that cannot be imagined. The embrace, the music with it's theme of love and loss. There is a new found knowledge that the temporal quality of life, of experience in this realm, has it's place in art. I shed many tears of pain, and many of joy.

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Three Kings, or Dia de Los Reyes. The last day of Christmas. As a kid, my parents reserved a small gift for us on this day. As small people feeling the post holiday let-down, it was very sweet. We went to church and celebrated in small ways this day when the kings brought gifts to the baby king. Gold, frankincense, myrhh. Today I clean my house, burn frankincense, make three kings bread, and ready myself to have a small milonga, hosted by me, Alan, and tanguera Tina, here in this little place on earth. My toast is to the friends and partners who have kept me sane, and sometimes even joyful, during a very hard time. I am no longer a practicing catholic, but I know a gift when it comes to me. Tango, and the people of tango, the friends of the tango, of Argentina, the musicians, the poetry, and my non-tango friends and family, those are the gifts.

E,

I always want to host a small milonga. My apartment is too small for that. Maybe I will rent a space to host one for my upcoming birthday. It's a good way to gather friends and family.

I hope yours has brought you many friends and you had a few good tandas. Sometimes, I feel tango is a good remedy for the worst of times that we are going through. And with it, I can feel the best of times coming.

Maybe 2008 be a good year for your and your loved ones.

Thanks TP,
Our brunch milonga was a wonderful party. We ended up dancing in my studio, which has the best floor, and now I just feel that the space has been blessed.
I highly recommend doing your own small event sometime. We had a small contingent of serious dancers. We has some real fun. Wish you had been here.
Tango really is a salve to the soul
Besos, E

Elizabeth,

Thank you for this touching post. It is so good to see the gifts that Tango gives to others... it makes me remember (once more) how much it gives me.

Hope, one day, to make it to your Milonga!

Elizabeth, I understand how instrumental Tango is (and not just the dance but the community of friends) in our journey through grief. I'm glad to have been a part of your community for the latter part of this year.

It was so much fun to co-host the milonga yesterday - what a success! We'll have to do it again when the sun is out and the trees are once again green.

La Tanguera, Wish you had been here! The food was beautiful, and Tina fired up here cafecito maker. I think we started a new tradition.

Tina,
Wow, it really was fun. Absolutly a great idea you had. Thanks so much for everything, and just for being you, Miss Boticelli.

Tango does so much more for us that we realize when we take that first class and buy that first pair of shoes. What a wonderful description of your tiny lovely milonga, and what a great idea. Hope 2008 brings you more of that warm closeness.

PS. I tagged you for a fun little assignment. Check my blog for the details. ;-)

Tango Goddess, Thanks to you too, and I feel the love with the tagging but haven't been able to deal with it. I would only be tagging people who already tagged me!
