Things that got me thinking about sexuality and age:
Tango in Her Eyes: http://tangoinhereyes.blogspot.com/ Entry titled "The Portenos v.s The Others"
This article in the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/08/AR2008020801607.html
I mean, those things, plus the fact that I am "old" and not dead. Young readers may stop here if the idea of people over thirty having sex is unpleasant for you. Tango in her Eyes was writing about women "owning their sexuality", and was not focused on age, necessarily The WP article was about the difference between American women and French women, and about owning one's sexuality for the duration, as is the way in France. Apparently American women are not having much sex after age forty, and after fifty it is pretty sad, and just forget about it after that. French women are still having sex on a regular basis until they die.

What is going on in America? When I am out around town I see women, often two or three together. The women I see are generally rich. They have access to the most beautiful clothes, the best stylists, the finest cosmetics and perfumes. But they wear khaki pants from J.C Pennys, socks and sandals. It seem that they don't want to be seduced or to seduce. Why? do we just give up because we are not twenty years old? Because we are not a size 00? Because no one is looking? Everyone is alone here. So why bother? No wonder.
Also women in America have been sold a bill of goods by the medical and pharmaceutical syndicate which lies to us about our sexuality and tries to tell us that we are not real or desirable women without their drugs, or surgery. They are liars and thieves. Exploiting the spirit of feminine power. Assholes if you will. But I will save that subject for later.
When I was in Paris, one thing was clear: Everyone notices what you wear, how you present yourself. You don't have to wear the latest trend or the most expensive things. Detail is always noticed by everyone in the subway car, on the street, in the cafe. Eyes are on you, and so it makes you think carefully about the choices you make before going out. Even the oldest, most frail people are out walking. Why do we never see old people here? In Paris the oldest ladies will wear a beautiful scarf to fit the mood of the day.
Lingerie. Sigh. Oh My. The Galleries Lafayette now has 26,000 square feet for it's lingerie department. I am not kidding. I spent more time there than I did in the Louvre. And when I go back I will do that again. Not just to buy but to have a front row seat in the theater of man woman relations. The sweetness of seeing couples there, some old, some young, the man taking a serious look at the structure and design of each thing, and choosing items perfect for his paramour. Oh how different, how normal, how darling.
When I started dancing I was of the khaki crowd I think. Very quickly the closet became a side chapel in the church of tango. Shoes ready, lined up beside the row of dresses and tunics, slips, leggings, lace, thrift store finds. When someone is noticing it makes a difference, and people in tango tend to live in the moment, to notice, to receive. Sex, it isn't just sex. I guess that is the discovery that American women might need to make? It's a beginning anyway. To ignore one's inner diva, the beauty that is there by nature, is really to deny the gifts we have been given. The same spirit which allows us to make a good meal, to nurse the baby, to be a friend, to braid the child's hair before she goes off to school, to love a man. To bring all the energy to the tango. A woman is sexy, it is not important what form she is in, or what age she is. I think that is what I want to say, but I am not sure I am able to do it. Yet.

You cover a lot of ground with this one.
Sure you don't want to tell us how you really feel about the drug companies?
The people on the street: This northwest tech center has attracted a lot of very much head-people. Geeks, if you will. It provides money, and it provides fulfillment for many -- up to a point.
I think most of the folks we see on our streets would welcome a richer life. Sex and the diva presentation are certainly a part of it. I believe there is a broader need for spirituality and expression that people do recognize but are just beginning to engage.
I'm hopeful that the richness and compelling nature of the full range of human existence will pull people out of their heads for whatever church serves them.

A French Woman is like, "well...(h)ee es enteres-ting, ay zinc ay may like too zample a bit ov im."
She may not commit to the full meal, but she certainly isn´t going to starve herself either.
Hi Elizabeth,
This is a great post. You point out some cultural differences that are very apparent to those who travel to other countries. I am like you, and I don't understand why it is that many women here seem to de-feminize themselves and the ones that take pleasure in their femininity are often looked at with confusion.
I think that is why some of us find refuge in dancing.
One thing that I have learned is that a lot of women don't want the khakis and the drabness, but for some reason they don't know what their alternatives are. There is a vagueness to their identity and they are have not found the focus that will recapture their feminine spirit.
I have a unique vantage point as a makeup artist and have been present to some truly lifechanging transformations. Someday I will write about them. I am not saying that a mere lipstick can change someone's life, but sometimes it is the spark that ignites the flame.
You are doing your part in leading by example. By showing there is another world for women outside of Target and Martha Stewart.
Miss Tango, We had fun reading your version of French Accent today. Yes, I zample a bit ov im. ee is delicious.
TB, Thanks for the thoughtful comment. There might be a very good niche market for those khaki people who would like to change. I know our stores do not really help them, with racks full of size 00 clothes (who fits these things?) and hipster stuff for kids. Also really snotty salespeople who don't seem to realize who is holding the credit card.
Makeup can be pretty powerful, and I think you for your posts and helpful ideas about that. Also you mention "a focus to recapture their feminine spirit" and I think that is what dance is for us, no? There is a good excuse to take care of oneself, so that the surface can express the inner spirit.
I was shy to talk about this, so the comments are especially appreciated. I get a little bit sideways with people who knew me before tango (BT) who don't quite get the new focus. Great to have you around for perspective.
We can thank the liberal/democrats for this sad malady. You have to remember in their zeal for political correctness as it is dangerous for a man to appreciate the female form, lest one be branded, punished, sued, castigated... We are all politically correct androgenous creatures.
Hi Ms. E...
Great post! There is something sexy about a woman trying to drown/hide her femininity in khaki's and funky mawmaw shoes. No makeup, hair not done. She may not think she's beautiful but she is. She is a woman. I notice her, just like I notice all of you.
I'm not really saying all I want to say on this subject...oh well...
About the khakis, etc... I find that I have the hardest time shopping for clothes in the U.S. because I have an hour-glass figure and I find that the clothes up there tend to be so boxy and shapeless. So I'm sure lots of ladies would love to do something different, it's just that it's not always possible to find what one needs. But just a few hours north, over the border and into Vancouver B.C. I find much more selection - more tailored, feminine clothes and also more lingerie. So I say, when in doubt, hop over the border and go shopping! :-)
I loved reading Miss Tango's French accent too today.
Anon, Have you really checked out the republican "look" lately? Oh, a nice sweater with teddy bears on it, now that's sexy. Give the good 'ol boys a real thrill. Ooh.
Alex, That's just messed up. ;) It is SO messed up that you are the first person to have actually forced me to use an emoticon. Damn!
Tina, I'm on my way to Vancouver. Shopping in Seattle is blah.
Teddy bear sweaters! Honestly! No wonder there are so many Hooker Scandals with political candidates!
Ladies, don´t ask what can my country do for me? Ask what Fuck Me pumps can I wear for my country!
Think: Condoleezza Rice.
Elizabeth, I was so moved by this post and the ensuing comments that I went out and bought a pear of peep-toe pumps! And I shall wear them for Seattle AND Argentina!
And for the record, Republican = "sensible" shoes.
Tina, It is truly gratifying to know that my writing is moving people to such positive actions during these trying times. Can't wait to see the peep toes.
... Janet Reno
*Teehee* ;)
Jackie Kennedy. I win!
Jackie O was not part of the politically correct androgenous creature movement... off to dress up and dancing!
What a great post!
Definitely agree with you in respect to American women.
Here in Hong Kong, you see lots of dolled-up women, but studies say they have no time or energy for sex: they're working too hard/too long hours.
