Friday

I just realized: Tomorrow I will celebrate six years of writing this blog.  It used to be better, funnier, more light. I looked through some of my favorites, and those that people enjoyed. Everyone goes through stages, and this last year has been my stage for integrating tango, and writing, and for enjoying it.

The thing I realized is that there are all these subtle forces that render us silent, or shall we say, cause a  softening one's message. It is a particular challenge when one is writing about their own subculture.  You would think that something like surfing, or dancing would be free of the censors, or free from the people who don't want you talking, or thinking, writing, or even meeting up at the milonga.  But just ask and Argentine person who lived through some recent decades.  Ask.

My friend Chas Smith (a surfer) just had a piece in the New York Times Sunday Magazine this past Sunday about the surf and extreme sports culture, about a certain family in Orange County.  Chas writes the truth about the dark underbelly of these things.  And  what happens when a writer is afraid?  That is what oppressions and holocausts are made of. Reading his work, reminded me of the importance, and relevance of saying what matters. Of speaking the truth as observed.  Not abstract, but truth told.

And  I am celebrating all that the writing has brought to me and to the continuation of speaking the truth.

Here are some of the entries I wrote back before I realized how dark things can get if you say it like it is.

There are a lot more.  I hope you read them and get something from it. Or just go dance.  What else is there really?
There is more.  Stay tuned.  We are not silenced.
Thank You Charlie for upholding the truth.

The links (in the version visible right now) are the ones from your edit page - they won't work for anyone else. Except for the top one. I think I remember the "quit tango" post, it was funny and wise.

Elizabeth... I found your blog (again) because of a recent comment. I appreciate your experience and wisdom that you brought via your comment on "What to do with Tango Kitty Litter." So congratulations on staying with your blog. The average blog writer doesn't stay with it very long; so you can really say that you stick with your passions. I added your blog to my "blog role" and you are up at the top because my blog role orders blogs by recent blogs rather than alphabetically.

Keep on writing!

Thank you so much Mark!
I have had a bit of a time of it with the tom cats not appreciating me. It amuses me more than anything. Nice to know that really confident, and strong leaders will enjoy the full conversation.
